A pair from Jeff King's team at the start of the 2013 Iditarod.

Photographing Iditarod 2013

Photographing  an Iditarod a few days or more into the race is in our future plans. We did make it to the race start this year, and captured some photos of the current race leaders getting started on the trail. The above photo, is a pair from the back of Jeff King’s team, as they hit a nice stride coming out the starting chute.

It’s now coming down to serious strategy and the last few checkpoints. 10 teams have made it to Koyuk, these will be the contenders as the trail heads west along the Norton sound for the last 100 miles to Nome.  Jeff King has taken the lead with Mitch Seavy only minutes behind.  Aliy Zirkle is just a little farther back in third position. Aliy took second last year, Dallas Seavy is in 8th position and won the race last year. It looks like 2013 will be a close finish. You can follow its conclusion at Iditarod.com
